Science in the Beginning is the first book in a hands-on, multilevel elementary science series that introduces scientific concepts using history as its guide. The beginning of history is given in the Bible’s creation account, and this book uses the days of creation as a way of introducing a wide range of scientific concepts including the nature of:

  • Light
  • Energy Conservation
  • Properties of air and water
  • Introductory botany
  • Our solar system
  • Basic zoology
  • Aspects of human anatomy and physiology

As the students learn about these scientific concepts, they are constantly reminded of the Creator who fashioned the marvels they are studying.

NARRATORS NOTE:

This audiobook is a supplement. It does not replace the book. Even though I do read through the instructions for all the experiments, it will be much easier for you to actually do the experiments if you have those instructions in written form. In addition, there are times when I will refer to specific pictures in the book, therefore I will change the wording from time-to-time so that you don’t have to be looking at the book while you listen to this recording.

Because Science in the Beginning is designed to give students a hands-on experience when it comes to studying nature, each lesson contains an experiment. Usually, there is some reading, then an experiment, and then more reading. As a result, most lessons are composed of three tracks so that you can skip around depending on your needs.

Earth Science is a set consisting of both the textbook and the solutions and tests booklet containing everything the parent/teacher needs to know for the subject.
Textbook (556 pages) – An answer key & tests book (113 pages)

Description.

This laboratory-based earth science course can be used for either eighth or ninth grade. Most homeschooled students should be ready for it in eighth grade, but privately- and publicly-schooled students will be more comfortable with it in ninth grade. It covers the general properties of the earth’s geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. Students learn about all the sections of the geosphere (such as core, mantle, crust, etc.) and then they study each in more detail. When studying the earth’s crust, they learn about minerals, rocks, and the rock cycle. Plate tectonics is then covered, which leads to a discussion of seismic waves, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Students then learn about fossils and how both uniformitarians and catastrophists interpret those fossils as well as the sedimentary rocks in which they are found. A discussion that compares uniformitarianism and catastrophism follows, in which the strengths and weaknesses of each view are covered.

After that, the hydrosphere is discussed. Students first learn the properties of water such as polarity, the ability to hydrogen bond, and heat capacity. That leads to a discussion of the hydrologic cycle and residence time. Students then learn about the waves, currents, and tides in the ocean. They then move on to the ice reservoirs on the earth and then the freshwater reservoirs. Water in the air is the last part of the hydrosphere that is covered. The atmosphere is then discussed, including the composition of air, the sections of the atmosphere, temperature gradients, and pollutants. This leads to a discussion of weather. The course ends with two chapters on space, one that covers the solar system and one that covers the universe as a whole.

There are roughly 55 hours of laboratory instruction in the course. A kit that contains specific minerals, rocks, and fossils allows students to do very detailed experiments related to the geosphere. These include mineral tests, rock analyses, fossil studies, density investigations, and magnetic property explorations. Students also get hands-on experience with waves, gases, wind, water purification, cloud formation, the Coriolis effect, precipitation, and acid/base interactions.

SPECIAL NOTE

Recorded Classes are available for this subject.  The classes are taught by Mrs. McKeeman.  There are two recordings per chapter of the textbook.

If you are unable to source the items for the experiments we hope that watching the lesson/experiments shown in the ‘recorded classes’ link will help you in the interim.

As soon as we can make the kit for this course available we will add it as a product for you to purchase here on the Oikos site.

We asked Dr Wile this question regarding the need for the kits.

While we are trying to get the kits here in South Africa, be that locally or imported, would students be able to use this Earth Science book while waiting for us to have kits in stock?”

here is Dr Wile’s answer:

”Students can use the book without the kits, but they won’t be able to do many of the experiments.  Some of the experiments don’t require anything special, but a lot of them require something from the kits.  The experiments aren’t necessary, but they do add a lot.”

Book Review

What Dr Jay has done for us here is something that I am bursting with excitement about. He has compiled a curriculum that is for the elementary years covering the seven days of creation.

Let me jump right in here and read to you the first line of the first lesson.

“Lesson number one, Let There Be Light. To start this lesson you should have Genesis 1 verses 2 and 3 memorised, especially the part about darkness and let there be light. The earth was formless and void and darkness was over the surface of the deep the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters then God said, “Let there be light”, and there was light.”

This gives you a wonderful example of how this curriculum continues. Dr Jay is speaking to the parent in this book and talking to the parent to share with their child. It starts with light in this particular instance and the first day of creation, but then proceeds all the way through the other seven days of creation. The way it is laid out is very much in accordance and similar to the Apologia books that Dr. Jay wrote for the higher education years. So what we have here is at an elementary level and covering science broadly.

One way you could use this book is as follows: If you are reading with your children and discover that they are really interested in land animals for instance, then you can take them through Apologia’s “Zoology 1: Land Animals”. This will allow you to go into a deeper study as you’ve discovered that they are so fascinated by what Dr. Jay has introduced them to. It is very, very exciting to us that Dr Jay has presented this book in broad strokes, but he does also go into each topic at great depth.

He’s made it so user friendly to the parent because he’s laid it out in such a way that ‘red’ activities are for older children to challenge them a little bit. All the ones in black are for elementary years (up to around age 12) but if you’re wanting to advance that particular activity, he’s given more advanced opportunities for older children. This means that you can use this one book for all your elementary years! By the time you’re finished, you’ve actually taught your children about the seven days of creation and introduced it to them on a scientific level. The most important lesson learned is the discovery of God as our Master Creator.

To give you an example of the content in this book, there is a photograph that Dr Jay took while visiting the South African Cape. It says, “I took this picture when I was in Cape Town, South Africa. While the picture is pretty I can tell you that it doesn’t do the scene justice because my eyes detect light much better than the camera does.” The detailed lesson that follows teaches us to appreciate light, and that what God has created is a gift. The natural talent that God is using through Dr. Jay Wile shares with us parents to help science become alive and something that we needn’t be afraid of. Science is actually very exciting and we can embrace and help our children be excited about it. Dr Jay helps us to teach them about their Creator, as He created them precious in His sight.

This set consists of: A Textbook (317 pages) & A Helps and Hints book (64 pages)

Science in the Ancient World is the second book in a hands-on, multilevel elementary science series that introduces scientific concepts using history as its guide. Because each lesson is built around an activity or experiment, it is engaging for all K-6 students. In addition, there are three levels of review for each lesson, so the parent/teacher can choose the depth at which each student is expected to grasp the material. The course contains roughly 90 hours of instruction, 35 of which are composed of hands-on activities.

The course covers the scientific work of natural philosophers who lived from about 600 BC to the early AD 1500s. It concentrates mostly on what these ancient scientists got right, but it does spend some time discussing what they got wrong, because even the mistakes that scientists make can sometimes advance our understanding of the natural world. Of course, when the students are taught something that is now known to be incorrect, they are made aware of this fact!

Because the course covers science as it was developed, it covers a wide range of topics including:

  • Human Anatomy
  • Medicine
  • Optics
  • Heliocentrism
  • Geocentrism
  • Sound
  • Music
  • Magnets
  • How Steam is Used to Generate Power
  • Motion of Objects Through a Medium
  • Combustion
  • Levers
  • Pulleys
  • Plant Growth
  • Plant Anatomy
  • Tree Ring Dating
  • The Atmosphere
  • Astronomy
  • Basics of Graphing
  • Plastics
  • Density
  • Water Flow
  • Friction
  • Erosion

Throughout the course, students learn that most of the great scientists who lived from AD 500 to the end of this time period were devout Christians who did science because they thought they could learn more about God by studying His handiwork.

Description

Recorded Classes are available for this subject.  The classes are taught by Mrs. McKeeman.  There are two recordings per chapter of the the textbook.

This laboratory-based, middle school science course covers a wide range of topics that are of interest to modern scientists. It starts by describing our current understanding of atoms, molecules, the chemicals that are necessary for life, DNA, and cells. These topics are all discussed in the context of history, explaining how specific scientific advances led to the scientific explanations that the students are being taught. This allows students to learn not only the current scientific understanding of these topics, but also how scientists reached that understanding.

The course then uses what the student has learned to describe the living world. It discusses the levels of organization found in creation and spends time discussing topics at each level. As a result, students learn how cells work together to make tissues, how tissues come together to make organs, how organs form organ systems, how those organ systems produce organisms, and how those organisms relate to one another in populations and communities. The student then learns how those communities interact with the physical environment to form ecosystems, which then form biomes. Along the way, students learn about fascinating new discoveries such as the function of the human appendix, the human microbiome, and soft tissue found in dinosaur fossils. Throughout the course, God’s design in nature is highlighted, and topics in the creation/evolution debate are discussed.

This course is focused on learning through experiments and other hands-on activities. While students will not do an experiment or activity every day they do science, they will have more days with an experiment or activity than days without one. Experiments and activities use household items or things that are sold in supermarkets, drug stores, or hardware stores.

The course is laid out so that the student knows what to cover each day, and most students will need to work an average of about 30-45 minutes every day of the week to cover the course in a year.
