In the early days of pioneering home education (Homeschooling), I used to get lots of questions from Moms asking me how it was actually possible, from a time point of view, and you know the many physical and practical questions that come to one’s mind.

So I decided to put together a little diary called “A Learning Lifestyle Diary”. I put an account of each day, of how I went about this learning lifestyle of educating my children at home while dealing with hospital admissions, international guests coming, running Oikos Family Ministries. How was this all possible?

So, I just simply put Day 1, one day at a time, and I wrote about what was actually practically going on in my day. And what has been the result of this is that Moms read through this little 30-day journal and they see it’s actually practically possible that learning at home doesn’t have to be a stressful approach of trying to fit it all in and how to fit it all together. It’s a different lifestyle altogether than taking your children to school. And it’s a complete mind shift as you may already have discovered, or still learning to discover.

People have found this little diary to be helpful to help them to make that transition across to different thinking regarding how to actually manage on a practical level in their learning lifestyle at home.

Book Review

This little book was written over a hundred years ago so you can just imagine the gems that is contained within. In fact, there are so many wonderful gems that I believe it should be called ‘Gems on Child Training’. Within the book you will find training on a child’s appetite, how to train our children’s faith, how to help them in courtesy and self-denial and so much more.

But it’s very, very good solid, sound advice that is all biblically based. So you can’t go wrong with that. People that have read this book have found that its actually changed their thinking regarding the training of their children.

Although there are many books out there on child training, this is the only ‘specifically’ child training book that we have in Oikos, simply because we have found its value to be of such great worth.

Book Review

I wrote this book in hope that it will reveal Jesus being the author, perfecter and finisher of our faith. To illustrate this in a small way, I’d like to just read a little bit out of the book for you. It’s from chapter 5, called “Panic or pray”.

“Trauma used to seize me so dramatically that I would be weakened by it to the point of helplessness and despair. Slowly I’ve learnt that trauma can be a mighty strengthening time of growth and opportunity to utterly submit to Jesus. I remember when our little 18 month old son, Jamie, woke one morning completely paralysed. This would be a good enough reason for me to fall into a state of utter panic and uselessness. Instead, God has shown me how to seize each of these such moments and turn them to Him immediately. Sadly, this is not always an automatic response of our human nature as I have learnt many times before. Yet God is patient with my failings and He gently guides me through each struggle. And as He does, we discover His perfectness in each situation when we focus on Him.”

I’d also like to just read a bit of the back cover to you which was written by our pastor, Jonathan Leach.

“This book is an adventure story of high drama, deep emotion and intense trauma. Pain, tears, confusion and desperation are frequent companions. The reader is invited to share the innermost feelings of a mother watching her children suffer. Nevertheless, joy and laughter keep bursting through the prevailing struggles of life. Book Review

I wrote this book because I was inspired by the fact that we had been through much suffering and valleys. I believe the best way to share it with you now is to read a little bit.

“Sitting in an I.C.U. unit and looking at my child with tubes and wires on her head, toes, arms, hands, chest and feeling alone and helpless, with an unbearable pain in my heart, prompted me to pray. Not only for Missy before my eyes but the other children around the world in I.C.U. And then to pray for their mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, grandparents, friends and doctors. Such heartfelt compassionate prayers of healing love for these people was brought about from my own suffering and pain. His love heals, lifts us beyond our present pain, takes our focus off ourselves and lifts it into a higher purpose, His purpose.

Once when Missy had been in hospital for about 5 days and was very thin and desperately ill, I said to her, ‘Do you know what I’d like to do for you now? I’d like to go and buy you a toyshop so you could have all the toys you’d like and I’d like to get you whatever you wanted to eat and however much you wanted.’ This, of course, was my desperate mother’s heart, feeling an absolute loss at how to help her. Missy responded, however, with this. She said, ‘Mom, don’t worry. You know that none of that would really help. What I would really like I don’t think you would like me to have. And anyway, you can’t buy it for me.’ I asked her what that could possibly be and she replied, ‘I hope you don’t mind Mom, but what I would really like is for Jesus to send me a nice soft cloud that He could put me on and take me up to heaven to be with Him.’ My reply was that I would pray with her and we would see what the Lord allowed. At such a young age this little girl of 5 years old, had understood that things had no value and did not really help us but was only Jesus who could ultimately help in every situation.”

So now I can share with you that Missy is an adult woman in her mid-twenties and she has survived this and the Lord didn’t take her to be with Him in heaven. Instead He has a purpose which He is fulfilling through her life. And it is my hope that this little book, Healing Love, is going to help others to get their focus on God rather than the pain that they might be suffering in their own personal situations.

In this book, Raymond and Dorothy Moore give you some great advice for successfully managing your family. Then after you’ve organised your home, they show you creative and practical ways that your family can start a home business together.

Through many true stories about families that are successfully managing their homes, the Moores help you manage your family effectively by showing you some of the following:

The importance of mutual respect of parents and children, how to teach your children financial responsibility, how not to be part of this wasteful generation, the fundamentals of starting a home business. I could go on.

Book Review

This is a famous book by Moores, Raymond and Dorothy. They are specialists and experts in their field of education and most specifically home education (Homeschooling). I have a very special little testimony to share with you about this book.

A grandmother who homes educated (Homeschooled) her five children here in South Africa read this book after her children had left home and were married and starting their own families. She said to me, “Sonja, please would you see to it that every parent that you provide resources to, you provide this book as well.” If she had read this book at the beginning years of her home education (Homeschooled) of her five children, it would have been very, very supportive to her and she wouldn’t have made some of the mistakes she believes she made. She even stressed that she would make this book compulsory. So, that speaks for itself but the title on its own also speaks for itself. Obviously this book is promoting not to race and push and have a stressful approach to home education (Homeschooling) by pushing children into learning when they not ready.

A book which shows that early schooling may not be the answer in terms of education.

It offers a wealth of evidence from sociologists, child psychiatrists, developmental psychologists, etc. that early schooling may, in fact, be harmful, and offers a new approach to your child’s education.
If your child has been in an educational system which did not suit his/her character and learning style, this would be a good book to read. It will help you understand how important it is not to push children in areas in which they are not ready, thus avoiding creating unnecessary learning problems.
