I’ve had a most amazing time….

So begins the Time Traveller’s astonishing firsthand account of his journey 800,000 years beyond his own era — and the story that launched H.G. Wells’s successful career and earned him his reputation as the father of science fiction.

With a speculative leap that still fires the imagination, Wells sends his brave explorer to face a future burdened with our greatest hopes… and our darkest fears. A pull of the Time Machine’s lever propels him to the age of a slowly dying Earth. There he discovers two bizarre races—the ethereal Eloi and the subterranean Morlocks—who not only symbolize the duality of human nature, but offer a terrifying portrait of the men of tomorrow as well.

Published in 1895, this masterpiece of invention captivated readers on the threshold of a new century. Thanks to Wells’s expert storytelling and provocative insight, The Time Machine will continue to enthral readers for generations to come.

Book Review

Classic Short Stories.

Are you wanting to be assured that your children are reading stories that are going to convict, inspire and encourage them in their characters for them to make right choices?

Well what we have done about that is the following.

Because it’s really hard to find decent literature, we have, over all our years of home educating (Homeschooling) and reading-aloud numerous books to our own children, selected the ‘cream of the crop’, and have put them on the online store for you, in the form of the following three titles…

72 Stories Worth Re-Reading:

That’s exactly why its called that, because every story in it is worth re-reading. They are not just your everyday stories. Each one is teaching something of value, we hope, well actually we know, as they have touched our children’s lives which has helped mould their character. The short stories in this volume are largely Biblically based but they are mostly based on imparting strong moral, principled stories.

Then the other two are very specifically, short stories for boys, “Tiger and Tom” and then short stories for girls “Kings Daughter”.

If you are wanting your daughters to be taught in piety, grace and modesty and being encouraged to be Godly woman, then every story in Kings Daughter encourages that.

It’s the same for the boys with the Tiger and Tom short stories to encourage young boys to be raised as men that would stand in stature, wisdom and in favour before God.

Book Review

I am very excited to share with you about these four little readers. And the best way I can do that is to just read a selection out for you.

“Nearly a hundred and fifty years ago William Homes McGuffey, gathered his own writings, and clippings, and selections from standard work. and he wrote the first four McGuffey Readers. Covering the areas of family life, farming, science, history, biography, secular and biblical literature, he presented his readers with a wide range of interests, and an even wider range than than which is found in today’s typical reading books. Since 1920 McGuffey readers have continued to sell, and have been used by schools and parents concerned about the content of children’s reading books.”

You might have found as a parent that it’s hard to go into the library or book store and find books that are at the right reading level for your children. What is wonderful about these McGuffey books is that they are very practical, in that they start at lesson one which is literally a sentence per line. The words are big and there’s good spacing between each word, making it comfortable for the beginner reader. Slowly as the stories go on, they start to introduce more complex vocabulary, which takes the reader progressively one small step at a time.

There are fifty to sixty short stories in each book. By the end of the book, the reader is doing multipart stories which are longer, broken into two, three or four parts. With each McGuffey reader the print decreases in size and the stories progress in length and difficulty. New vocal words used in the story are listed at the end of the story, giving the parent opportunity to discuss these new words with the reader. Comprehension questions are also included with the progression. By the time the reader reaches the fourth McGuffey book, they are reading literature at a university level.

I would like to close with a personal testimony about the McGuffey Readers. Each day I would ask my children to read their next story to me from their little McGuffey book. I would then be able to determine where they were struggling and help them along. I would remind them that as soon as they finished reading their McGuffey to me, I would read it back to them. So we made it a very comfortable, enjoyable and special time of bonding and experiencing the whole process of reading. Reading was not something to be afraid of and there were no negative connotations around it. We have been really blessed by these McGuffey books and hope you will be too!

Description

It is important to remember that the Fourth Reader does not mean “a reader for the fourth grade”. In fact, many reading authorities today say that some of the selections found in this volume are equivalent to reading material presented in today’s colleges.

As in the other volumes of the series, all new questions have been written for each lesson. This volume as with the others also includes “Spell-and-Define” lists.

A unique feature of this edition of the Fourth Reader is the note preceding most lessons. Each note helps the reader understand the lesson’s meaning, significance, or historical setting. Information for the notes was researched from many sources. This last volume introduces the advanced student to the best of forensic, descriptive, sacred and poetic literature of the world.

Book Review

Hello, I’m Sonja Wood. I had in the studio with me my beautiful daughter Missy. I asked her to share with us about a book she has written. She started writing when she was 8 years old. This is the little book she wrote “Missy, An Autobiography’.

I asked her why she wrote this book? Missy replied with “I had a chronic blood disease called Primary Immune Deficiency and I couldn’t find any support material aimed at children to help them understand what this disease was about, how to treat it, how to deal with it on a day to day basis. So I decided to compile a little autobiography of my experience and my day to day life with having Primary Immune Deficiency. I did this to support and hopefully help other children and patients that were facing similar struggles.”

Missy didn’t actually write this book herself, what would happen was when she was lying in bed at the hospital she would tell me her story, her autobiography, and I would write it down. Then when I got home I would type it into the computer and we would then proceeded to do the necessary layout and so on. Missy did the artwork for the book and then we would pop in some photographs. She also did a little illustration and story at the back of the book of the actual Immune Deficiency. She illustrated the book herself when she was eight years old, she then wrote the autobiography aspect of it when she was ten years old. After that, we compiled it into the book. Saying she ‘wrote’ the book actually meant drawing and speaking, and myself as her mother would put it into text format. Missy’s motivation was for supporting other patients with the same illness that she had, yet we have found this book to be a lot more than that as it is encouraging other home educators (Homeschoolers) to write their own little stories and autobiographies. We also hope it encourages parents to put into a published format what their children have brought out from their hearts and minds.

Description

This is a story about a young lady, Missy, aged twelve at the time of writing this book.

Missy suffers from a rare blood disease called Primary Immune Deficiency. This has required her to have replacement therapy of antibodies via intravenous or subcutaneous infusion her whole life.
At the time of printing, this book Missy undergoes daily infusion of antibodies into her abdomen which takes approximately two hours every day.
Not only has Missy suffered from physical health but she also has had immense struggles with learning. Missy was diagnosed with severe dyslexia and dyspraxia amongst a number of other complex learning disorders!

This little book is a miracle in many ways. A child who was given very little hopes of learning, or even life, has accomplished writing her own story about the life she lives!

Book Review

The Classic Collection

You can just imagine the treasures we have collected after 20 years of home education (Homeschooling) and reading aloud to our children. Especially with read-aloud being one of their favourite times of their home education (Homeschooling) memories.

We would love to offer a huge variety of some of the treasures which we have discovered along the way. But for now we have selected the most profoundly supportive stories which have impacted many children’s lives.

Roses and Thorns: This story is about the thorns in our lives which could hurt others, and making sure that we are being a lovely fragrance before the Lord towards others.

Little Daisy and the Swearing Class: The essence of this story is helping our children be convicted to have clean mouths, and speak kindly and sweetly to one another. The little girl in the story, Daisy, teaches young and old the downfalls of breaking the third commandment, though she lives in an ungodly home after being orphaned she doesn’t forget her parents teaching to honour God.

Little Medicine Carrier: This is an outstanding story for teaching your children about the value of integrity and faithfulness, even when no men are watching us, but to live as people who know that all our actions are noticed by the eye of God.

Weed with an Ill Name: Is all about pulling the weeds out of our lives, showing children how sin is like the tough roots of weeds, which must be pulled out of their hold in the soil, before they, by degrees, take over the entire field of our hearts.

So each story is going to be teaching a very specific message, that we hope will be producing good fruit in your children’s lives as is the intent of these stories.

Description

Few children’s books speak frankly with them about their own sinful nature and inclinations; or their tendency to judge harshly those who sin in ways that they do not believe themselves capable of. There may be no children’s story ever published which displays these points better than this one and also persuading children how sin is like the tough roots of weeds, which must be pulled out of their hold in the soil, before they by degrees take over the entire field of our hearts.
